A new machining centre for the Bern workshop

The new line runs three shifts a day, and the first measured results are in. Cycle time fell by a fifth.

What changed on the floor

Three cells were rebuilt around a single pallet pool. The operators kept their programmes; only the fixturing and the tool presetting moved. Nothing about the machines themselves changed.

• One pallet pool, six machines.
• Tool presetting moved off the machine.
• Two operators per shift instead of four.

The numbers

1. Cycle time: down 21 %.
2. Setup time: down 40 %.
3. Scrap rate: unchanged.

We did not buy a single new machine. We bought back the hours between them.
